Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery ( MBBCh ) , University of Wiwatersrand
  • Fellowship of the College of Ophthalmology , FCS ( Ophth ) SA.

Dr Cathrine Dewar, although originally from Johannesburg, has spent the last 12 years living and working in KwaZulu Natal.

She studied at the University of Witwatersrand where she received her MBBCh in 2003.  Her community service years found her at Madadeni Provincial Hospital in Newcastle.

It was during this time that she was given the opportunity to start her ophthalmology journey working in the Madadeni Ophthalmology department.


In 2007, Cathrine was offered a registrar post in ophthalmology at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg and completed her fellowship in Ophthalmology and the FCOphth(SA) examinations in 2010.

Cathrine worked as a consultant in the busy Ophthalmology Department at Greys Hospital for the next seven years.  During her time at Greys Hospital she was involved with the teaching of medical students, training of ophthalmology registrars and delivery of various tertiary level ophthalmological services.  Cathrine also ran the uveitis clinic, in which she has a special interest, at both Greys and Edendale Hospitals.

For a number of years, Cathrine also voluntarily assisted Air Mercy Services with the provision of ophthalmological surgical outreach to more remote areas in KZN. Cathrine is married to Dr James Urry who is a specialist urologist at Netcare Waterfall City Hospital.  Together they have 3 beautiful daughters
